Established in 1990, the time of deepest social-economic and cultural crisis in Georgia, The International Humanitarian Union Catharsis is a complex centre providing several types of emergency, social and senior care services for socially vulnerable and unprotected population and, in the light of our almost three-decade long experience, these services are crucial in most of the cases and areas. Services provided at Catharsis are available as a matter of courtesy free of charge for any necessitous persons.
In the years of 1995-2008, Catharsis had managed several affiliated branches operating in six regions of Georgia caring of more than 1500 beneficiaries throughout the country.
Founded with the initial aim of providing hot meals and basic human services in a warm, family-like setting, Catharsis, responding to social and healthcare needs in the community, has been soon transformed into a large facility offering a wonderful array of social and senior care services covering general medication and pharmacy, canteen, rehabilitation, relaxation and fitness centers, library, second-hand clothes’ studio etc. Furthermore, there were established classical and popular music choruses, theater, internet cafe and chapel at the Centre.
The increasing rise in life expectancy and the associated growing number of elderly citizens pose new challenges to the society. In this regard, remaining and being healthy in old ages is one of the most important topics. We understand that human’s desire for independence, dignity and choice does not diminish as we age, so, it is very important for us that our seniors continue having a voice in their daily life. Seniors want to be healthy, they want to be happy, and they want to share their experiences and continue to make new memories. Our communities seek to support all of these desires by offering a wonderful array of services in a warm, family-like setting. We measure our success by our seniors’ satisfaction. When they are happy, we are happy too. We always encourage interested residents and families to experience our community first-hand. We are confident when you meet the staff and residents you will truly feel like you have found a home. We support all ideas and projects to creating a living environment suitable to senior citizens.
The International Humanitarian Union Catharsis is the one of the pioneer not-for-profit associations founded in the Republic of Georgia after the dissolution of The USSR. Our NGO represents a joint effort of government and the private sector; around 1,000 private business companies donate money to Catharsis, and more than 100 organizations contribute products, services and medicines on a regular basis. The Georgian Government, in turn, offers the building free of rent, and supplies Catharsis with free labor in the form of the so-called Brothers of Virtue, for whom the work at Catharsis is an alternative to serving in the military.
The way Catharsis works is similar to a public-private partnership (PPP), defined as “a long-term contract between a private party and a government entity, for providing a public asset or service, in which the private party bears significant risk and management responsibility, and remuneration is linked to performance” (PPP Knowledge Lab). Although Catharsis might not fully satisfy the formal definition of a PPP, it definitely contains elements of collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Catharsis has an open-door policy for drop-in donors that lets them see how their contributions are being used. In 2016, the charity managed to attract enough local donations for a budget of 944,989 thousand GEL, or just over 393,745 USD, without aid from abroad, the government or the Church.
